21814. Gottardo Piazzoni (1872-1945) San Francisco Tonalist Painting “Dawn” 1903. This is an early example of Tonalism, a style that emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Using a limited and muted palette of grays, greens, and browns, Piazzoni has created a serene and contemplative mood. The composition is simplified, focusing on the subtle transitions of light and shadow over rolling hills. The soft, indistinct forms and atmospheric quality are characteristic of the Tonalist movement, which prioritized mood and emotion over realistic detail. Piazzoni continued to use these soft, muted style with the murals he created for San Francisco’s Main Library in 1932. Signed. Excellent condition. 18″h x 22″w. Frame 24.5″h x 28.5″w $15,000
