Giuseppe Cadenasso’s home and studio, “The Sign of the Eucalyptus”, was set high upon Russian Hill overlooking San Francisco. A gregarious, well liked and highly respected fixture in the San Francisco art community, his home/studio became a gathering place for the artists, musicians and literary figures of the day. Trained exclusively in San Francisco he was an early pupil of Arthur Matthews.
With the exception of occasional views of Mt. Tamalpais, Cadenasso found his inspiration in the bucolic environs in and around San Francisco rather than in the grandeur of dramatic mountain scenes. He painted “in plein air” often in quiet corners of places like Golden Gate Park or Mills College.
This painting is characteristic of the artist’s vision and is a particularly fine example of his work in a modest format. Cadenasso’s paintings of this size, and smaller, are often of a higher quality and greater presence than his larger format works.
