Hotchkiss was an American gunsmith who worked for both Colt and Winchester and moved to Paris in 1867 to manufacture munitions. Hotchkiss died in 1885 and the business closed in 1887. Van Erp used any spare shell casing he could find at the Mare Island Shipyard in Vallejo.
